Highways
I have always believed that my duty was to pursue a piece of sculpture until I had done the best work I was capable of, no matter how long it took, whether months or even years. But the night before a one-man show in the 1980s I decided to do an impressionistic self-portrait in only one or two hours. I justified this departure from my normal work philosophy with the thought that I am an unfinished sculptor, so a self-portrait could be unfinished. I showed the clay the next day, then later decided to flesh it out into the 20th Century's evolution of the American cowboy — the iron horseman biker.
