Years after John sculpted the Birdwoman Monument and corresponding maquette with Sacajawea's son in a papoose on her back, he wanted to see an image of face-to-face mother/child interaction between Sacajawea and her son, Pompey. Thus, the Sacajawea Maquette was born. This finely detailed maquette makes a good companion piece to the original Birdwoman Maquette.
For more information about the courageous Sacajawea who led the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1803-1805, please see the Birdwoman Monument page.
